Latency Issues (Windows 7)

Hello Folks- I am struggling with latency issues occurring over the past few weeks, hoping you can spare a few minutes for some guidance. I've run both malwarebytes and my installed eset, and both come up clean.

The issue I'm having is simply intermittent pauses regardless of what I'm doing- and actually, all I'm doing most often is typing up word docs. I found the great latency tutorial posted by niemiro (Thanks for that!) and followed accordingly (photos attached). I've run DPC/xPerf a few times using the instructions, and during those times iastor.sys was usually at the top of the list. I updated that driver through the HP site (which was not easy to do), but it didn't seem to make a difference at all.

I've included a graphic of my system info. At this point, I'm not sure what to try next, hoping you can help? Let me know what other info I need to provide and I'll get right on it.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Phoo

Welcome to Sysnative, Phoo.

Full details of the HP notebook would be useful so we can check base hardware details.

The DPC table has afd.sys at the top, this is a network -related driver that usually deals with 3rd party access to the network/Internet as far as I recall. The DPCLat image appears to show spikes at ~30 second intervals. If that's consistent, could this be some 3rd party software, maybe Bluetooth or cellphone software polling out or incoming?

You've already had suspicions that malware may have been behind it, afd.sys is a standard Windows driver that has been, I'm pretty sure, attacked by root/boot-kits in the past; it might be a good idea to follow the malware procedure here to get it fully checked over: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/security-arena/2507-malware-removal-posting-instructions.html

satrow - thank you for taking the time. I've pasted my system info below, I'm guessing it's overkill but not sure how much info you need (I'm still green to these things in a lot of ways).

I will go through the steps you outlined and reply this weekend.

Thank you again,
Phoo

Did your latency charts used to reflect something better? I ask because frankly, a couple spikes 30 seconds apart is not bad. And while the WEI score is not a true benchmark indicator, 4.5 is not high to start, and with only 2.9Gb of RAM available (suggesting integrated graphics), you don't have a lot of resources available.

What sort of "pauses" (audio, graphics, everything)? How long do the pauses last? And as satrow asked, are they consistent?

Hi- apologies for the delayed reply. I understand what you are saying Digerati, this DPC doesn't look so "busy". I get a different graph every time I run, some are busier than others. In general, about 50% of the time I'm on, the delay is about 3 seconds after every 10. It's consistent not matter what I'm doing, though I don't often play videos or listen to music. I'm mostly on doing work, either my job or writing papers for school. The few times I do check out a vid or mp3, it will lag every few seconds also. The other 50% of the time, the lag is about 2-3 seconds maybe every 30 seconds.

The DPC I posted earlier was run while I was 10 second 3 second lag scenario.

satrow, i did as you asked and posted in the ecurity arena, which is where Corinne stepped in to help.

Thank you Corinne for the security link, I will do as directed. Thanks again everyone.

I just encountered a system with high DPC readings and audio problems. Checking all the usual suspects revealed and resolved nothing. Then I decided to check his virtual memory settings and noticed he had his PF disabled on his boot drive. I asked why he disabled the PF, he said because he had 16Gb of RAM, he did not want Windows using the PF on the slow HD, plus he did not want to commit so much disk space to PF. That is bad logic. Windows looks for and will use the PF, regardless how much RAM is installed. That is not a bad thing. It is also not a bad thing to let Windows (at least with W7 and later) manage the PF as it does an excellent job of it. Plus, it should be noted that Windows will expand and contract the PF as needed. So those with lots of RAM should not worry the PF will take up all their disk space.

Anyway, I ran CCleaner to clean out the clutter, then defragged the disk and enabled a Windows managed PF and surprise surprise, DPC and audio problems disappeared.

I'm not sure that scenario was as clear cut as it seemed.

Windows will use the fastest drives' PF when it has the choice, without a PF, it will silently create a temp one on the System drive.

In your case, it may have been an error detected in the (presumed) secondary drive PF and it was Windows creation/expanding of the temp PF to use instead of the faulting one that caused excessive I/O in the slower System drive that manifested itself in the high DPCs. The greater the fragmentation levels and the smaller the contiguous free space on the System drive, the greater that work load and any knock-on performance effects would have been.

Agreed - but then determining the cause of latency issues or fixing latency issues sure is not clear cut either.

without a PF, it will silently create a temp one on the System drive.
Oh? I don't think so - got any documentation on that? I am pretty sure IF the "admin" user had previously set the system drive to not use a PF, no temporary file will be created - under normal circumstances. However, Windows will create a temp PF on the system disk if one was previous set (on any disk) but the file is deleted, became corrupt or otherwise unusable. Note I don't care about dumps on this machine so I have my PF on an old 60Gb SSD, Drive S:). Just looked and there is no pagefile.sys on my C: (boot/system) drive (and yes, I have hidden files set to be viewable).

He had only one drive with just one partition so it was not that.

The greater the fragmentation levels and the smaller the contiguous free space on the System drive, the greater that work load and any knock-on performance effects would have been.
True, but there was plenty of free space and the drive was not heavily fragmented. I, as a matter of routine, defragged before setting up the PF to ensure there was sufficient contiguous free space for the new PF.

Certainly, I am not suggesting this is THE solution to DPC legacy errors. But it is something else to look at.

Maybe not clear cut to us but your fellow MVP, André Ziegler, has developed his own method of pinpointing the cause(s) of a large % of DPC/latency issues. His replies often make it seem that it can be clear cut in many cases.

Documentation - no, MS runs a closed shop as far as much of the Windows internals are concerned. I do recall Mark Russinovich, in one of his more recent articles/blogs (Pushing the Limits of Windows series?) mentioning this and I have seen it mentioned elsewhere also. Note that I (as I think MR also wrote) used 'silently' and 'temp', this would imply that it would use a different naming structure and may not be in the 'standard', root location, thus difficult to detect.

He had only one drive with just one partition so it was not that.
Apologies, I thought you used the comparative form 'slower' to describe his System drive, this led me to believe that there may also have been a comparatively 'faster' drive installed and in use for the PF.

MS released (I think last year?) a KB to enable creation of a crash dump on W7 when there is no PF on the System drive; it's mentioned in a thread here at Sysnative somewhere too, if it's of any use to you.

Well, I've been following Mark R for a long time and remember reading about it too - but again I think that was in the event a set PF could not be utilized for some reason - not if no PF was set. But you are right also that MS is not always forthcoming with their data. I just know my C drive does not have one.

I noticed you posted pics of the xperf log, but not actually the log itself (at least from what I've found). Can you zip that up and upload it, either here or to a 3rd party site like Mirrorcreator.com? I'd like to look at it.

I looked at the data, but it's evident it didn't record the stuff I was looking for. To have it do so, setup xperf like you did before, but instead of the xperf -on DiagEasy that the tutorial instructed, type this instead:

Code:
xperf -on PROC_THREAD+LOADER+PROFILE+DRIVERS -stackwalk Profile

Capture a couple of hangs, then stop it with:

Code:
xperf -stop -d %userprofile%\Desktop\trace.etl

Zip the resulting ETL file as well as any folder that was made with it, then send it over. Typically a capture of this type will generate the ETL but also a subfolder in the same directory that contains all sorts of stuff such as symbol information and the like that will help analysis. Overall it may be too big, so upload to Mirrorcreator.com or whatever. Also inform me the exact number of hangs you were experiencing during the capture, as that'll help me discern what to look for.

Hello,
I'd add some parameters to the xperf and suggest start and wait untill something happens:
xperf -on PROC_THREAD+LOADER+PROFILE+DRIVERS -stackwalk Profile -BufferSize 1024 -MinBuffers 256 -MaxBuffers 256 -MaxFile 256 -FileMode Circular
Stopping and merging and all other instructions are the same as Vir Gnarus posted.

m.g.

I ignored the Buffer and Circular options just cuz I didn't think they'd be necessary, but if you intend to split the capture into multiple files then mgrzeg's option is the best way to do it!

I thought rather about keeping the size of the resulting file in limits and not letting the file to grow too much :) 256 MB file is big enough to keep last few minutes before the problem, so you can safely wait even a whole day for the good moment to stop the trace and when it occurs, we'll have all the data. The size of compressed file should be less than 40MB.

m.g.

Doh! I forgot Circular just recycles through the existing file and doesn't break it into multiple. My bad! Yes, Mgrzeg's is the better option here.

Hello everyone-
Ok, ran xperf as you directed, and attached the only file I see generated. I started DPC checker at 8:54am and ran it to 09:03am. During that time period, there was one red spike hitting 14000μS every 30 seconds, and one yellow spike hitting 1100μS every 68 seconds. Let me know if you need additional information? Hopefully I did all of this correctly.

Again, thanks for taking the time everyone. I've reverted to borrowing a friend's laptop to get through finals week as mine is just too hindering to use.

satrow and corinne, haven't forgotten about you.
